are handmade wooden dolls originating from hot springs villages in the Tōhoku region of Northeastern Japan. They were handcrafted by artisans as children’s toys, and their distinctive appearances of rounded heads and limbless bodies decorated in black, red, and green ink, have made them recognizable the world over. Today,

are sought after by collectors and those who seek to preserve folk traditions, and they’ve even inspired modern creations such as Nintendo’s Miis. From a collection courtesy of Yo and Ingrid Harita,

Small Wonders: The Art of Japanese Kokeshi

invites viewers into the craftsmanship and whimsy of traditional Japanese folk art.

Small Wonders: The Art of Japanese Kokeshi – James F. Ranii Foyer exhibit

invites visitors to look beyond the page and explore the craft behind the books we often take for granted. Tracing the evolution of bookmaking, from pre-industrial hand-binding techniques to modern mechanized production and today’s DIY zine culture, the exhibition highlights the processes that transform ideas into physical objects.

Visitors will encounter the materials and methods that define a book’s structure, including sewing, binding, and preservation techniques. The exhibition concludes by celebrating contemporary self-publishing practices, emphasizing how individuals continue to produce and share information independently. By bridging history, craft, and creativity, this exhibition encourages visitors to engage more thoughtfully with books as both functional objects and works of craftsmanship.

Organized by the Fullerton Museum Center.

Final Rites: Death, Mourning, & Beyond

"A Man Named Charlie: Fender’s Unsung Hero", celebrates the life and legacy of Charlie Davis, a quiet force behind Fender’s golden era. Beginning his journey with the company in 1957, Charlie worked every step of the manufacturing line, from rough-cut wood to the final finish. But it was his unmatched skill in winding pickups that earned him legendary status. Revered by musicians and trusted by icons like Dick Dale, Charlie became the only technician many would allow near their prized guitars. His hands shaped the sound of surf rock and beyond, helping define a generation of music. Through decades of change, Charlie remained fiercely loyal to Fender, embodying the spirit of craftsmanship and dedication. This exhibit honors his remarkable contributions and finally gives this unsung hero his spotlight.
